....Betsy
began work in sacred dance in the 1980's. She helped form the
Sacred Dance Group in Savannah. Upon moving to Sewanee, Tennessee,
she joined the Liturgical Dance Group. Once returning to Savannah,
she then joined the Islands Dance Theatre, a ballet troupe.
....Teaching dance has been a career for Betsy, one that started
back in the '60's covering: ballet; pre-ballet; creative movement;
modern dance and folk dancing. She held educational courses on
creative movement as well as teaching dance to preschoolers. She
has also held dance workshops& retreats. Over the past 10
years she has facilitated retreats in: sacred dance; liturgical
dance; movement as prayer, and art and spirit.
....Dance has long been Betsy's passion, her first love, which
turned into a career spanning over 5 decades. She began formal
dance training at 7 years old and continued through pre-adolescence
& young adulthood as a ballet student.
....In the '50's she began to perform with two ballet companies
in Atlanta. She also performed with the Modern Dance Group at
Agnes Scott College. Dorothy Alexander, founder of the Atlanta
Ballet, teacher & choreographer and sacred dancer, was her
primary mentor over the years.
....At one point Betsy gained an American Indian styled name of
"Dancing Flower of Light," so named by one of her colleagues
in a workshop.
....Betsy took up yet another career, one of social work. At the
University of Georgia she earned her Masters Degree in Social
Work. She has 25 years of experience in protective & clinical
social work with abused and bereaved children and adults. Also,
for 9 years she has done volunteer work at Hospice's annual bereaved
children's camp.
....Yoga has become Betsy's latest passion along with dance. She
began an in-depth study of yoga at Satchidananda Ashram near Buckingham,
Virginia. It was there in 2001 that she attended classes, and
in 2002 she returned for further training. In 2003 she worked
on staff assisting in training yoga instructors on how to teach
children's yoga.
....Betsy is dually certified as an instructor in both adult and
children's yoga. She has been teaching since 2001. Also, she has
facilitated yoga workshops and retreats teaching basic health
benefits of yoga, benefits that are both physical and spiritual
in nature.
....She gained yet another name at Satchidananda Ashram, an Eastern
Indian name this time -"Brahmi." So her full appellation
now is: Betsy Dancing Flower of Light Brahmi Boyd Strong.
.... Will,
her husband, has long had a passion for words. In the 60's &
70's he worked on several underground newspapers around the country,
among them Atlanta's The Great Speckled Bird. In Savannah he started
Albion's Voice which originated as a literary publication at Armstrong
State College.
....Will then began traveling the U.S. Contributing to various
other underground publications. His travels took him to Washington,
D.C., and westward to Berkeley, Venice Beach, Santa Monica and
Seattle. At one point he joined V.I.S.T.A., the domestic peace
corps, serving in Houston and Albuquerque.
....Eventually, he returned to Savannah and again attended Armstrong
State College. He became a member of Masquers, the drama group,
and reported for The Inkwell, the student newspaper. He also served
as President of the Literary Club and Chess Club. In 1980 he completed
degree work in English with a minor in History.
....Will was also a long-time member of Toastmasters International.
He advanced to the Silver ATM level in Toastmasters. He served
several times as judge for speech contests sponsored by various
civic clubs.
....His interest in writing has turned to poetry, especially concrete
poetry in which the words take the shape of the poem's idea. He
is currently in the process of collecting poems for a chapbook
publication. He is also putting together other poems and writings
for a larger edition of his writings.
....Will began studying yoga in 2002 at a YMCA class where he
and Betsy connected as students. He then came under Betsy's tutelage.
They soon married. They have been enjoying a student-teacher/student-student
relationship in yoga. They honeymooned for a week at Pura Vida,
a yoga retreat in Costa Rica. They also attended a 2 week long
yoga retreat at Satchidananda Ashram.
....Will has become one of Betsy's model students. He looks forward
to becoming certified as a yoga instructor, then able to assist
her in teaching couples yoga.
